YBGF Presents: Spirit of Africa in the Gardens
Sunday, May 1, 1pm - 3pm
Yerba Buena Gardens Festival opens the 2005 season with
a high-energy infusion of music and dance of the African
Diaspora featuring Diamano Coura West African Dance
Company, Reconnect Dance Ensemble, and the African Queens
Youth Performance Troupe.
San Francisco Youth Arts Festival

the San Francisco Youth Arts Festival showcases outstanding
achievement in the visual, literary, and performing

College of the Sequoias Symphonic Band Concert

standards, and new arrangements of familiar works. The
program includes First Suite in F by Thom Ritter George;
Masquerade by Phillip Sparke; Florintiner March by Julius

YBGF's Music in the Gardens 101: Magui Moro Music of
the Philippines
Saturday, May 21, 1pm - 2pm
Experience the amazing music and dance of the Islamic
Magui people of Southern Philippines hosted by Datu
Gutierrez Mangansakan II of Mindanao. Guest performers
include kulintang virtuoso Teng Emba; Datuan Kalanduyan,
a master performer of the kutiyapi (2 string lute) palending
(flute) and gandingan (talking gongs); award-winning
choreographer, dancer and musician Faisal Monal; and
Akmad Siao and Norisa Tanggo Sembao, masters in Maguindanoan
dance and music. In association with KulArts.
Artists Guild of San Francisco

The Artists Guild of San Francisco is the oldest year-round
outdoor art collective in the country! Its mission is

YBGF's International Music Festival
Thursdays, June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 12:30 to 1:30pm
Our annual concert series features local and international
music artists from a variety of countries including
Brazil, Germany, Japan, and Sweden among others.
June 2 - Sweden - Mia Karlsson accompanied by pianist
Jonas Olsson. Ms. Karlsson is the recipient of the Jenny
Lind Scholarship for promising sopranos.
June 9 - Venezuela - The Snake Trio & special guests.
The Snake Trio (Latin jazz) has been called "a
refreshing breath of Latin Jazz with a cool Venezuelan
twist that will have you savoring your Coltrane with
joropo and your Ellington with calypso." The Snake
Trio is comprised of Jackie Rago on cuatro, mandolin,
bandola and percussion; Donna Viscuso on flute and alto
saxophone; and Saul Sierra on bass.
June 16 - Mexico - The Marimba Ixim Tinamit, nine musicians
playing two marimbas. The marimba, native to Chiapas
and Guatemala, is an antique instrument used in religious
ceremonies and secular events.
June 23 - Germany - The Septer Bourbon Jazz Quartet
perform from their highly acclaimed album The Smile
of the Honeycakehorse.
June 30 - United States: Richard Howell Quintet. Multi-instrumentalist,
saxophonist, and vocalist, Howell has explored a vast
spectrum of music. He has performed at the Montreaux
Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center
and Royal Albert Hall.
Israel in the Gardens Festival
Sunday, June 5, 11am - 5pm
Celebrate Israel's 57th Independence Day and the diversity
of the Bay Area's Jewish community at Israel in the
Gardens, the largest annual Jewish community family
festival. During the day-long festivities and concert
guests will become familiar with and celebrate Israel's
arts, culture and fabulous cuisine.

YBGF's Music in the Gardens 101: Calcutta to California
Saturday, June 18, 1pm - 2pm
The New Maihar Band performs music of Ali Akbar Khan
weaving traditional Indian melodies and rhythms into
a dynamic orchestral texture, combining the contemporary
energy of modern music with the deep insights of an
ancient tradition. Members include Wallace Harvey and
Jackie Godden, voice; Manose Newa, bansuri flute; John
Riedel, bass; Christopher Ris, sarod; John Rothfield,
violin; Max Rossmassler, guitar; and "Bubai"
Debopriyo Sarkar, tabla, moderated by Robin Sukhadia.
Native Contemporary Arts Festival

TODCO Senior Poets
Tuesday, June 14, 12:30pm - 1:30pm
The TODCO Senior Poets grace Yerba Buena Gardens for
the 7th year, proving creativity is ageless. Under the
direction of Nancy Deutsch, they bring wit and wisdom
to their original works of poetry. Their poem, "Dare
We Dream In Concrete" is engraved in granite at
the entrance to the Yerba Buena Gardens.
Summer on the Rooftop Children's Series
Saturday, June 25, 12 noon - 2 pm, Children's Rooftop
Saturdays are for kids! Interactive performances especially
for children, in association with Zeum. Melody of China
(Noon) specializes in Chinese wind and percussion instruments.
The music is in the style of Chinese opera. $lot Ma¢hine
(2pm) is a true San Francisco sensation whose youngest
punk rock member is 7 and whose oldest -- at 12 -- is
still eligible to order a Happy Meal. Formed at SF's
Creative Arts Charter School, its young members credit
the Clash, the Sex Pistols and the Ramones as inspirations.

July 7 - Japan presents Fujimoto-kai, a shamisen group
that plays traditional Japanese music such as Hauta,
Zokkyoku, short versions of Nagauta, folk music, and
other Japanese and western compositions.
July 14 - Nicaragua - Regional music by Marvin Benavides
y Su Grupo, and Los Clarks
July 21 - Switzerland presents traditional folk songs
with yodeling and accordion by Lisa Ward Dillier and
duets by Steve & Sue Fox on Alphorn.
July 28 - Brazil presents Mauro Correa Quinteto who
will play Brazilian classical, Brazilian choro, samba,
bossa nova and popular Brazilian music, Argentinean
tango and world music from Latin America.
YBGF's Puppets on the Rooftop Series

YBGF Presents: We Are Family Picnic
Monday, July 4, 11am - 4pm, Children's Rooftop Garden
A true San Francisco tradition. The We Are Family Picnic,
drawing hundreds of families to the Gardens, is an opportunity
for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals,
families and friends to celebrate Independence Day,
and each other. Featuring humorist Heather Gold, Sun
and Moon Ensemble, Dixieland Dykes+3, Derique the Fabulous
Clown, Sister Kitty Catalyst, The Foghorns, Jackie Jones
and Her Tap Dancing Cat, Kid Karaoke, and Animal Call

Stars of Merola Opera in Yerba Buena Gardens
Sunday, July 10, 2pm - 4pm
Artists from the acclaimed Merola Opera Program will
perform semi-staged, extended excerpts from The Abduction
from the Seraglio, La Cenerentola, Jenufa, and Dialogue
of the Carmelites. See and hear tomorrow's opera stars
in an exciting concert with full orchestra in this relaxed,
accessible setting.
YBGF's Music in the Gardens 101: Jazz Orchestra 101
Saturday, July 16, 1pm - 2pm
The 15 piece Marcus Shelby Orchestra explores the unique
range and dynamics of a jazz orchestra through compositions
by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Count Basie and
Marcus Shelby. From powerful big band swing to the elegant
ballad, Jazz Orchestra 101 will include a musical exploration
of the instruments of the jazz orchestra and offer the
audience the opportunity to compare the structure to
that of a classical orchestra. Composer/Bassist Marcus
Shelby has performed with legendary jazz artists Billy
Higgins, Eddie Harris, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders,
Billy Childs and Sir Roland Hannah among others and
toured with Wynton Marsalis.
Books by the Bay
Saturday, July 23, 10am - 4pm
An annual celebration of local authors and independent
booksellers sponsored by The Northern California Booksellers
Association, Books by the Bay features more than 50
local and specialty booksellers, author readings and
signing, children's authors, family activities and more.
This year marks its 10th anniversary of the book fair
that raises contributions for literacy causes. A full

San Francisco Theater Festival
Sunday, July 24, 11am - 5pm
This colorful and exciting festival of short performances
on ten stages by over 50 theater companies and solo
artists celebrates the Bay Area's lively theater world,
including children's events, musicals, improv, hip-hop,
Shakespeare, mimes and storytelling. Solo performers,
new circus acts, comedy and tragedy, the San Francisco
Theater Festival has it all!
Summer on the Rooftop Children's Series
Saturday, July 30, 12 noon - 2 pm, Children's Rooftop
Saturdays are for kids! Interactive performances especially
for children, in association with Zeum. Acrosports (Noon)
will put on a short circus performance, and then engage
the kids with tumbling mats and juggling. Kid Beyond
(1 pm) is a singer/songwriter/beatboxer who will perform
beatboxing then move into his songs, an evocative, infectiously
funky brew of hip-hop/techno-flavored alt-pop. He will
instruct young people on how to create their own beatbox
songs.
San Francisco Mime Troupe
Sunday, July 31, 1:30pm - 4pm
Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for another wild
yet thought-provoking ride with the world-renowned San
Francisco Mime Troupe, with the brand new play, Doing
Good, inspired by John Perkins' Confessions of an Economic
Hit Man. Loaded with history and a global perspective,
Doing Good has a backdrop of US foreign policy since
WWII. It is an epic work, in step with the Mime Troupe's
raison d'etre, laced with laughter, tragedy, snappy
dialogue and live music. The SF Mime Troupe's 2005 play
breaks from a clear farcical style and presents a drama
that raises questions about the story's main characters
and the moral choices that each faces on their journey.
AUGUST
SoMa National Night Out
Tuesday, August 2, 6pm-10pm
National Night Out, a night in which neighbors reclaim
their neighborhood streets and parks, is celebrated
every year in neighborhoods across the country. SoMa
families and youth are encouraged to attend "SoMa
National Night Out" in the amphitheater at the
Children's Rooftop of Yerba Buena Gardens. The night
includes youth spoken word and poetry performances,
an outdoor showing of a family-oriented movie, free
food, family portraits, bicycle repairs, raffle prizes,
and carousel rides. Sponsored by the Safety Network
Program, the San Francisco Police Department, the San
Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival,
and MJM Management Group.
New Zealand in the Gardens
Thursday - Friday, August 4-5, 12:30-1:30pm
A presentation of traditional kappa haka dance of New
Zealand, presented by Toi Maori and Tourism New Zealand
in association with Yerba Buena Gardens Festival.

Breastfeeding & Child Health Fair
Saturday, August 6, 10am - 3pm, Children's Rooftop
Celebrating the benefits of breastfeeding and the importance
of child health, the fair includes information, interactive
games, face painting and music for children. The San
Francisco Breastfeeding Promotion Coalition is a multicultural
collaboration of agencies and businesses concerned with
infant health.
Afro Solo presents Jazz in the Gardens

The AfroSolo in collaboration with Yerba Buena Gardens
Festival observes its twelfth annual AfroSolo Arts Festival,
a celebration of African American artists giving voice
to the Black experience.

The best of Bay Area musicians including
August 11 - Field is Walter Kitundu and Robin Sukhadia,
an intersecting collaboration between instruments and
tradition: tabla and phonoharps.
August 18 - Tom Rigney and Flambeau (Cajun roots) Tom
Rigney, the fiery, electrifying violinist/composer,
joins forces with some of the finest musicians on the
San Francisco roots music scene to form Flambeau. Flambeau
showcases his passionate, virtuoso fiddling, his commanding
stage presence, his range, depth, and originality as
a composer, and of course, those notorious red boots.
Pistahan - Filipino American Arts Exposition
Saturday, August 13 - Sunday, August 14, 11am - 5pm
Yerba Buena Gardens hosts this 12th annual Filipino
festival of arts, culture and cuisine, including displays,
crafts, entertainment and food-all family friendly with
that inimitable Filipino flair.
YBGF's Music in the Gardens 101: Melody of China
Saturday, August 20, 1pm - 2pm
Melody of China performs Chinese classical, folk, contemporary
music. Hong Wang will talk about the musical synergy
created from the synthesis of an ancient cultural tradition
and the youthful, multicolored American culture. Players
include multi-instrumentalist Hong Wang; yangqin (Chinese
hammered dulcimer) virtuoso Yangquin Zhao; Xian Lu on
dizi (Chinese bamboo flutes); Gangqin Zhao on guzheng
(table harp); Wei Wang on percussion; Zhang Yu on suona
(double reeds), and Wanpen Guo on sheng (mouth organ.
The musicians have performed with the SF Symphony, Berlin
Philharmonic and Anthony Brown's Asia America Orchestra.

The Yerba Buena Gardens ChoreoFest showcases the Bay
Area's wealth of talented, innovative artists. Utilizing
the beauty of the Gardens' urban environment, guest
curators Brechin Flournoy and Shereel Washington facilitate
new collaborations by artists whose styles appear to
be disparate from each other. Hip-hop, contemporary
dance, Butoh, and more converge into four dynamic site-specific
dance installations at the Yerba Buena Gardens. Guest
artists include the sizzling hot New Style Motherlode
and spoken word artist Aya de Leon; the contemporary
stylings of Lizz Roman & Dancers, Leigh Evans, and
Carpetbag Brigade Physical Theater Company; plus Rashad
Pridgen, Malia Connor Movement Company, HerPic Performances;
youth groups and special guest artists. Each unique,
site-specific work is charged with waking up the space
to reveal the harmony that comes out of juxtaposition.

of the renowned jump-swing band, Indigo Swing, Josh
Workman's highly anticipated debut CD Jumpin' At The

September 8 - Cascada de Flores (Mexican & Cuban traditional), a folkloric quartet, is dedicated to the exploration, preservation and dissemination of Mexican and Cuban regional music and dance.
September 15 -Jang Seven (Jazz) Jon Jang's musical language is based on the re-contextualization of Chinese folk songs within a contemporary music context. Jang's music is a musical metaphor of the changing face of Chinese America. The ensemble will perform Jang's Sweet Whisper of a Flower, A song cycle of traditions in transformation, featuring Jon Jang, piano and composer; Wayne Wallace, trombone and music director; Jim Norton, soprano saxophone; Francis Wong, tenor saxophone and flute; John L. September 22 - Maria Marquez Quintet (world jazz) - At the intersection of jazz and world music, singer, composer, arranger, producer Marquez, has been credited with possessing a voice between that of Edith Piaf and Nina Simone. September 29 -Francis Clay & Friends (Blues) One of the all-time masters of blues drumming, Francis Clay was Muddy Water's drummer on and off for about 15 years. Francis was in the thick of things during the heyday of Chicago blues and played with all the greats. His highly original and immensely propulsive drumming drives numerous recordings by Muddy Waters and others. He can be heard on the acclaimed album "Muddy Waters At Newport." He has toured and recorded with Little Walter, Otis Spann, Clifton Chenier, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Lightnin' Hopkins and Jimmy Reed (to name a few) and was a founding member of the James Cotton Blues Band. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Saturday, September 17, 1pm-2pm
Professor José Cuellar, aka Dr. Loco, and his
Rockin' Jalapeño Band take the audience on a
narrated musical tour of the U.S. Mexican borderlands
from Texas/Tamaulipas to the Californias. This educated
insider's overview of Chicano cultural history is illustrated
with classic and contemporary examples that reveal the
systematic transculturation that characterizes this
essentially modern music with deep roots in multiple
cultural traditions.

YBGF's Music in the Gardens 101: 101 Rhythms and Movements
of Bali with Gamelan Sekar Jaya
Saturday, October 1, 1pm-2pm
Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the internationally acclaimed fifty-member
ensemble, presents an exciting tour of Balinese music
and dance. Through narrative and performance, Sekar
Jaya's director Wayne Vitale gives an insider's perspective
on centuries old but rapidly evolving traditions, exploring
the complex interlocking rhythms and virtuosic ensemble
sensibility of Balinese music, the myriad expressions
and delicate motions of Balinese dance, to the dynamic
interaction that unites them. The performances include
renowned guest artists-in-residence from Bali.

Come enjoy a beautiful late Summer day of music. Bring
your family and celebrate the gift of music and help
acknowledge its enormous importance in our community
and daily lives. This event is brought to you by the
Live Music Task Force of the Musicians Union Local 6.
Gardens Ghoullery Walk
Sunday, October 30, 12 noon-3pm, Children's Rooftop
Children under ten and their families parade around
the Rooftop Gardens in Halloween finery. Zeum, the Yerba
Buena Ice Skating and Bowling Center, and Mo's Grill
provide free treats and discounts for trick-or-treaters
in costume. Performers will provide entertainment throughout
the day. The Ghoullery Walk also features storytelling,
musical chairs, costume parades, and prize giveaways
for kids.

Carousel Lighting Ceremony
Saturday, November 26, 5pm - 6pm, Rooftop Gardens -
Carousel Plaza
YBA&E joins the MJM Management Group, Zeum, Yerba
Buena Ice Skating and Bowling Center to host this annual
ceremony with holiday entertainment, cookies and hot
chocolate nd local celebrities.
Filipino Holiday Parol Stroll and Celebration - TBC
Saturday, December 10, time tbc
A traditional Filipino and Filipino-American celebration.
