SAN FRANCISCO, CA. September 12, 2005. The 2005 Yerba
Buena Gardens Festival presents Gamelan - A Hundred
and One Rhythms and Movements of Bali in a narrated
family concert in Yerba Buena Gardens from 1 to 2:30
pm on Saturday, October 1, 2005.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya, the internationally acclaimed fifty-member
ensemble performs the wondrous rhythms and dance of
Bali. Through narrative and performance, Sekar Jaya's
director Wayne Vitale gives an insider's perspective
on centuries old but rapidly evolving traditions, exploring
the complex interlocking rhythms and virtuosic ensemble
sensibility of Balinese music, the myriad expressions
and delicate motions of Balinese dance, and the dynamic
interaction that unites them. The performance includes
renowned guest artists-in-residence from Bali: I Made
Terip, a prominent musician of his generation who has
brought accolades to the North Bali music community;
and I Wayan Budiarsa, dancer, choreographer, musician
and teacher from the village of Butuan, who has trained
both children and adults, and formed several new dance
centers.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya will perform the first segment of
Kali Yuga. This powerful contemporary dance drama, commissioned
by the National Dance Project, has been created by a
renowned interdisciplinary team of artists, including
Bali's charismatic modern dancer I Ketut Rina, Indonesia's
internationally renowned essayist and poet Goenawan
Mohamad, and the Bay Area's brilliant director and writer,
Ellen Sebastian Chang.
Peter Stack, S.F. Chronicle, writes, "The high-drama
dance style of Bali gives the performances extravagant
movement - and an edge too. In a vast language of gestures
and postures, from quivering fingers to menacing crouches,
dancers imbue their characters with larger-than-life
qualities in a dramatically oversized world."
The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, which takes place
from May through October, features over 150 events,
including classical and jazz concerts, opera, performance
art, international music concerts, dance performances,
children's programs, theater, visual arts, puppet shows,
cultural festivals, and special events.
All performances and events are free and open to the
public, drawing an audience of San Francisco and Bay
Area residents and visitors that numbers more than 100,000
each year.
