Yerba Buena Arts & Events Announces
The 2006 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival
(San Francisco, CA. March 4, 2006) - Linda Lucero, Executive Director of Yerba Buena Arts & Events, today announced highlights of the programming for The 2006 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival at Yerba Buena Gardens. Lucero says, “I am super-excited about the amazing performers in our 2006 season, who run the gamut from Latin Jazz trombonists to Yiddish Klezmer violinists, from African griots to Balinese dancers, celebrating our commonalities through music, dance, theater and spoken word.”
The Festival, which takes place from May through October, features over 100 events, including classical and jazz concerts, opera, international music events, theater, dance, children's and family programs, visual art exhibits, educational programs and cultural events. Opening the season, May 7 is Gamelan Sekar Java, Music and Dance from Bali led by two of Bali's most brilliant artists. The audience will have the opportunity to enjoy the complex interlocking rhythms and virtuosic ensemble sensibility of Balinese gamelan, and the myriad expressions and delicate hand and eye motions of Balinese dance.
The festival continues the very popular Music In The Gardens 101 Series of educational and interactive programs especially conceived for musicians and audiences of all ages. Thursday lunchtime concerts will feature the very best of Bay Area musical masters including Jon Jang, John Calloway, Babatunde Lea, Flying Other Brothers, and many more. Returning to the Festival this year will be internationally renowned companies such as the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet School. This year also features the Forest/El Bosque Sculpture Exhibit, San Francisco Theater Festival, Stars of Merola Opera, and the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra. There will be an International Music Series with musicians from around the world, theater events with the El Teatro Jornalero! and ShadowLight Theater’s presentation of Wayang Bali. The cultures of Israelis, Filipino-Americans, Native-Americans and African-Americans will be celebrated in cultural festivals and concerts. Family activities include the Children’s Rooftop Series of interactive storytelling, puppetry and music, and Mayor Gavin Newsom invites you to celebrate San Francisco's wonderful families with a day of free fun in October at the Family Festival everyone can enjoy!
Along with these many events, this year presents in August, ChoreoFest showcasing the Bay Area's wealth of talented, innovative choreographers. Headlining the third annual Latin Jazz Festival in the Gardens in early October is New York's premier salsa bandleader Jimmy Bosch and his high-energy group. The Festival also presents the award-winning Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble, while Halloween is celebrated with the Gardens Ghoullery Walk October 29.
