The Forest/El Bosque Sculpture Exhibit Makes Exclusive West Coast Stop at Yerba Buena Gardens Festival
June 10 – July 5, 2006
(May 3, 2006) - Presented by the Consulate General of Mexico, in association with The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, The Forest/El Bosque Sculpture Exhibit will be on display from June 10 – July 5 at Yerba Buena Gardens. The Forest/El Bosque is an artistic-ecological sculpture installation created to show a greater awareness of the dangers of deforestation throughout the world. The theme of the exhibit is the tree. Curated by Naomi Siegmann, the fifteen Mexican and American artists of The Forest/El Bosque have constructed trees from a variety of materials with the exception of wood or wood byproducts. Siegmann explains, “Through The Forest/El Bosque, I hope to provoke thought about the vulnerability of our orbiting home and the tenuous balance of its resources with its inhabitants. Human survival and the preservation of nature are not mutually exclusive; on the contrary, they are inexorably interrelated. Through an artistic interpretation, I hope that by contemplating a world without trees we can better understand their importance in our lives.” The Forest/El Bosque has traveled to San Luís Potosí, Zacatecas, Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Antonio, Santa Fe and Los Angeles before arriving in San Francisco.
Alfonso de Maria y Campos, Consul General of Mexico, says of the exhibit, “By promoting creativity and allowing it to express itself freely, we can be confident of having the best possible ally in communicating with persons everywhere on important global matters such as the conservation of the environment. The Forest/El Bosque exhibit, which gathers artists from Mexico and the United States, is a bi-national art project the Consulate of Mexico has been working with the Yerba Buena Garden Festival for over a year. This is an example of art building bridges and the commitment of many individuals working together on projects for the benefit of the community as a whole.”
