Yerba Buena Gardens International Music Festival
June 14-18 & 21-25, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. May 18, 2004. For two weeks, the 2004 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, in collaboration with consulates and cultural centers in San Francisco, will again host a wide variety of musicians from around the world to play free lunchtime concerts. The International Music Festival, an annual celebration of the summer solstice, features local and international musicians from the U.S., Nicaragua, Brazil, Switzerland, the Republic of the Congo, Sweden, India, Japan, Germany, and Italy.
The Festival kicks off on June 14 with a Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble. Representing Nicaragua on June 15 will be Flor de Sacuanjoche. Musicians will celebrate the traditional music, dance and culture of Nicaragua with marimba, guitar, and maracas. From Brazil on June 16 comes the Mauro Correa Quinteto who will play Brazilian classical, choro, samba, bossa nova and popular Brazilian music, Argentinean tango and world music from Latin America. The Edelweiss Band will perform the traditional music of Switzerland on June 17. June 18 will feature the music of Borrina Mapaka representing the Republic of the Congo.
Following the first week of the Festival will be Afrobeat in the Gardens on June 19 from 12 noon to 5 pm. This musical tribute to Fela Anikulapo-Kuti features the hip-hop group Blackalicious, Antibalas, a 14-piece big band from New York, and Bay Area sax, bass and drums trio Broun Fellinis.
Week two of the Festival begins on June 21 with a performance by Swedish opera singer Mariann Fjeld Olsen. This concert will also feature a traditional Swedish Maypole Dance celebrating the Summer Solstice. On June 22 the music and dance of India will be performed by South India Fine Arts. Representing Japan on June 23 is the San Francisco Taiko Dojo who will perform traditional and contemporary rhythms, dance, and martial arts. June 24 features German jazz musician Andreas Willers. He will be joined by Bay Area musicians Devon Hoff (bass) and Ches Smith (drums). Closing the Festival on June 25 will be a performance by musicians from Italy.
