An Afternoon of Authentic Argentine Tango Music and Dance at Yerba Buena Gardens

Date: Sunday, October 6, 2002
Time: 1-5 P.M.
Place: Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade, Mission Street between 3rd & 4th Streets in downtown San Francisco
Admission: Free!!!

Pack a picnic and bring your family and friends to Yerba Buena Gardens on Sunday, October 6th for an entire afternoon of Argentine Tango music and dance. Tango in the Gardens offers something for every one-kids, friends, music-lovers and dancers alike! This free performance is part of the 2002 Yerba Buena Gardens Festival.

Tango in the Gardens begins with a concert by Tango No.9, San Francisco's own, critically acclaimed Tango quartet that is part chamber ensemble, part jazz combo, and totally Tango. Tango No. 9 will offer a wry, sophisticated program that mixes traditional Tango music for dancing with the jazzier Tangos of avant-garde composer, Astor Piazzolla. To make the event even more special, Argentine composer/arranger Norberto Vogel will play bandoneon, the accordion-like instrument that gives Tango its mournful, sensuous sound. Tango No. 9 will also play live sets for general dancing later in the afternoon.

Tango No. 9's concert will be highlighted by performances from some of the Bay Area's best Tango dancers, teachers and choreographers, including Buenos Aires native Nora Dinzelbacher and her partner, Edward Neil. Ms. Dinzelbacher has created group choreographies especially for this event. Other dancers include local Tango teachers and performers, David & Nancy Mendoza, and modern dancers José Navarrete, Debby Kajiyama, and Arnel Alcordo. Each couple will premiere original choreographies during their solo performances.

Following the performances, Nora Dinzelbacher will teach a short lesson for anyone in the audience who is interested in learning to dance Tango. Beginners can dance their newly acquired steps along with the seasoned Tango dance aficionados at the outdoor Milonga, or Tango dance, that follows. Live music by Tango No.9 will be augmented with recorded Tangos from the Golden Era.

Tango No. 9 is Musical Director Catharine Clune on violin, Greg Stephens on trombone, and Seth Asarnow on piano. This season they will be joined by very special guest, Argentine composer/ arranger Norberto Vogel on bandoneon. Their first CD, "all them cats in Recoleta" pushed the group beyond its "cult" status in San Francisco, thanks to its sensuous and inspired interpretations of "Nuevo" Tango. Tango No. 9 kicks off its 2002 West Coast tour with this performance at Yerba Buena Gardens. years, exploring Tango and Danzón, as well as producing, choreographing, and performing social dances and physical theater.

José Navarrete is a native of Mexico City. Navarrete has collaborated with Tango No. 9 since 1999, when they performed the score for his evening of Tango and modern dance theater, Two Tangos and a Kiss at Theater Artaud.
